FSSAI Guidelines
The FSSAI guidelines are prepared to ensure the safety of the essential food for its consumers especially infants and children. Over the years, many new and innovative methods of packaging have been introduced which are user-friendly and also preserve the milk for a longer duration of time.
The various types of packaging available for milk and its products are given below:
• Cans
• Bottles
• Pouches
• Cartons
In India, pouches are preferred the most because they are cheap, convenient and easy to handle.
Thermoformed plastic bottles are being widely used as milk packaging because:
• They have wide resistance for temperature
• The protect the milk from UV rays
• They are more stable
There are certain guidelines set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for the packaging of milk and its products. These are:-
• Heat-treated milk and its products should be bottled mechanically and its sealing should be done automatically.
• Only packages which can be cleaned and disinfected properly should be reused, rest should be discarded.
• Sealing should be done after the last heat treatment is completed. Also, the sealing should be done immediately after the heat treatment to prevent any adverse effects of external organisms.
• The milk products should be placed inside the rooms provided for storage immediately after packaging.
