The Advertising Council of India (ASCI) has signed a Memorandum of understanding with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. In the interest of increasing supervision over the misleading advertising in food and beverages sector.
Under this memorandum, the ASCI can take up cases against any advertisement they find misleading in the food and beverages sector.
If advertisers fail to comply with the warning then they can forward the complaint to FSSAI, who in turn can take corrective measure under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
FSSAI can take serious action against any misleading advertisement related to the food industry, the same they have entered into the MOU with the ASCI, which provides examples towards any such activity. This would bring accountability in the advertising sector.
After FSSAI became partners with ASCI it received 21 complaints regarding misleading advertisements out of which 6 have been dealt with and the rest are still under study.
FSSAI surely doesn’t wish to face another case like the Patanjali advertisement case. So, it is taking all the possible steps it can to avoid any such future cases.
By shaking hands with the ASCI it can now forward such cases of misleading advertisement to them, who will further review it and take actions accordingly.
